Magical Wakehurst winter lantern festival in Brighton

Glow Wild winter lantern festival is a magical night-time experience and it’s a true delight whatever age you are. Journey through Wakehurst’s beautiful botanic gardens and woodlands. Trees, ponds, forest floors and 16th century mansion will be brought to life with thousands of lights and fire displays.

Sussex’s spellbinding illuminated trail to celebrate hidden heroes of the natural world. As darkness falls, the gardens are brought to life with glowing lanterns, mesmerising projections, immersive soundscapes, and glistening torches of fire.

This year’s trail is inspired by aspects of nature that often remain unseen – a grain of pollen, a seed on the wind, and giant floating dandelion seed heads. Also a fairy-tale fungi that enriches the soil allowing plants to flourish. With this theme in mind, Wakehurst has commissioned artists and creative studios to produce an array of illuminated artworks that will celebrate the hidden heroes of the natural world with a 500-flame fire display.

By andie melvin-harris

Along the trail children will delight in spotting illuminated woodland creatures including owls and badgers going about their nocturnal rituals. A bespoke atmospheric soundscape will guide visitors along their journey through the wintry landscape. The trail will culminate in the sight of the UK’s tallest Christmas tree adorned with 1,800 lights.

“Getting outdoors and connecting with nature is enormously beneficial to our well-being. Glow Wild is a completely outdoor event that can be enjoyed while adhering to social distancing measures, making it the perfect evening out this winter.”

-Wakehurst’s Head of Public Programmes, Lorraine Lecourtois

The Rampion Offshore Wind Farm supplies enough green energy to power the equivalent of almost 350,000 homes2 – around half the homes in Sussex – and reduces CO2 emissions by up to 600,0003 tonnes a year. Installation of the 116 turbines was completed in September 2018 when Rampion became the first offshore wind farm off the UK’s south coast.

Brighton Rampion Centre

Climate change, renewable energy and our planet’s future are brought into sharp focus at an exciting new attraction on Brighton seafront. Brighton Rampion Centre opened on 10th September 2020.

The aim of the centre is to increase awareness and understanding of the wind farm itself, as well as to raise knowledge about offshore wind energy and global climate change. It houses exhibitions, games, videos, as well as a 360˚ virtual reality (VR) experience  that will take you out to the wind farm itself!

The interactive displays offers learning more about wind energy and discover the whole Rampion story since its inception over ten years ago.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions they are offering the opportunity to book an exclusive session for you and your family up to a maximum of 6 people. The booking slot will be for 30 minutes and you will be the only ones in the centre, along with their Visitor Centre staff. This will enable you to have a safe and relaxing experience, without worrying about the need for social distancing.

The visitor centre will be cleaned after each visit, for your peace of mind.

Easy to get to and completely accessible for wheelchair users, the Visitor Centre is a short walk from the City centre, Brighton Pier and other City landmarks, and is close to cycle routes, bus and train connections.

The Visitor Centre is FREE to enter and forms part of the £4million Rampion Community Fund, voluntarily created for the Sussex community.

Beautiful and unique, The Bandstand is located on Brighton’s vibrant seafront. It was first opened in 1884, designated as a Grade II Listed Building of Architectural importance.
In May 2007, following decades of neglect, Brighton and Hove City Council agreed to fully fund its’ renovation. Brighton & Hove’s historic seafront bandstand was restored to its original condition and reopened in 2009.

The Bandstand was designed by Phillip Lockwood a Brighton Borough Surveyor. It is considered to be one of the finest examples of a Victorian bandstand still surviving in England today. The fancy cast iron work was manufactured by Walter Macfarlane & Co. of Saracen Foundry in Glasgow, now operating as Heritage Engineering.

The Victorian’s original aim was to develop the area and create a vibe for music and performance. As it would serve the local community along with all of its visitors to Brighton & Hove.

The original design featured a bridge linking the upper promenade with the Bandstand. This was removed in the late 1970 s. The ground floor was used as public conveniences until it was closed in 2003 and is now a cafe.

Between April and September, The Bandstand is available to hire for weddings and ceremonies. The ornate architecture is magnificently detailed offering the perfect choice for couples wanting an elegant beach side ceremony.

The Bandstand hosts a variety of bands every Sunday throughout June, July and August. These performances usually take place from 2 pm until 4 pm, depending on the weather.

Brunswick Town is an area in Hove, in the city of Brighton and Hove. It is best known for its elegant and well-preserved Regency architecture.

Originally, the area had been part of Wick Farm. Then in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, nearby Brighton had become very fashionable. The Kemp Town estate there had been a success, and so in 1824 architect Charles Busby entered into an agreement to build houses on land lying at the extreme east of Hove, adjacent to Brighton.
The name “Brunswick” was presumably taken from House of Brunswick, a term sometimes used for the House of Hanover, the name of the British royal family at the time.

Busby designed Brunswick Town as a long row of terraced houses facing the sea. In the middle point of this sea-facing terrace was a central square, which stretched back. This square was named Brunswick Square. The terraced houses, in Brunswick Terrace and in Brunswick Square, were built for the upper classes, they were designed as ‘first class’ housing.

Brunswick Square and Brunswick Terrace have had a large number of prominent residents. Including Roger Quilter (composer), John Horace Round (historian), Robin Maugham (writer), Robert Bevan (artist). Sir Winston Churchill was schooled in Hove in the Brunswick area between 1883 and 1885.

The Regency Town House museum in Brunswick Square is 19th-century houses surround a garden overlooking the sea. The nearby pebble beach is lined with colourful huts and backed by the neat Hove Lawns, with its public bowling greens. Music and drama fans head to events at The Old Market theatre.

The Brunswick Festival takes place each year, centred on Brunswick Square. The Brunswick Festival Group is a voluntary organisation which produces this annual festival in celebration of the diverse community of Brunswick, Hove.

Brighton’s West Pier is iconic and mysterious. It has been devastated by fire and the crashing waves of the English Channel which have washed most of it away.

The Pier was designed and engineered by Eugenius Birch to attract visitors and survive in the hostile environment of the seashore. Opened in 1866, it was a simple and functional structure built. The final building, completed in 1916, was a graceful concert hall. It attracted and entertained holiday-makers with all the pomp and frippery that is the essence of the English seaside resort. The pier was unique in being largely unaltered since that time. The proportions and style were unrivalled. The concert hall and the theatre were two of the best Victorian and Edwardian seaside entertainment buildings.

@Hrn. Poshor

It was granted Grade II listing protection in 1969. In 1998 the Heritage Lottery Fund approved a £14.2m grant for its restoration. But a massive storm in 2002 caused terrible damage and two arson attacks within the next six months, destroyed its pavilion and concert hall. The English Heritage concluding that restoration was still viable, that tragically became impossible when HLF decided to withdraw lottery funding.

The West Pier Trust hopes that the success of Brighton’s latest big attraction, the British Airways i360, will eventually stimulate the building of a new contemporary West Pier.
It’s a 150-metre observation tower designed to give stunning views of the coast and attract visitors to Brighton and Hove. It’s been designed by the team behind the London Eye. Do you want to know more about the British Airways i360? Please check our previous post https://9sliving.com/british-airways-i360/.

Brighton’s unique and vibrant district, North Laine. Representing a colourful mixture of small and diverse shops and independent traders. Whether you’re looking for clothing, fashion, gifts, services, arts, crafts, entertainment, shops, pubs, bars and cafes you’ll find it all here in the North Laine, Brighton.

North Laine is an area that grew up in the 1830s. When Brighton first became famous because the Prince Regent(later George IV) turned a modest farmhouse into a glittering exotic royal palace. Between the Pavilion and Brighton station you will find 300 shops, 37 cafes, 22 pubs, 4 theatres and a world-class museum. North Laine is also home to the cultural centre of Brighton with the new library and piazza in the jubilee complex.

What more could you need for that perfect day shopping by the sea? You can discover the most individual, laid back shops. You can buy everything from the latest designer fashions to retro 50s wear. From oriental and Balinese furniture to cutting edge interior design. From unique jewellery to shops specialising in kites, musical instruments, beads, organic health foods and there’s even a vegetarian shoe shop! You won’t however find many of the high street chains.

One of the less shopping-oriented streets, Upper Gardner Street, is closed to traffic every Saturday for an on-street market. Amongst the houses of this street are several antiques dealers.

The area was originally set for demolition to allow for high rises, a flyover and carpark, until Ken Fines, who was the Borough Planning Officer, had it designated North Laine Conservation Area in 1977. As a result of his efforts the save the area, tourists and locals will continue to enjoy the charm and history of this unique bohemian shopping area riddled with entertainment venues.

Bohemian shopping

North Laine shops are nearly always locally run by their owners who individually source the eclectic mix of stock. As well as the fabulous bargains that can be picked up all week, on Saturdays you can browse at the flea market and many of the streets are closed to traffic creating a Mediterranean style outdoor shopping experience.

Once you discover North Laine you will come back for more of the bohemian shopping, or maybe just to hang out at one of the excellent cafes or bars and enjoy the passing show.
